The Chilean rifles would have the crest of Chile where the OVS rifles would only have the makers name. This example is a OVS rifle and is maker marked Deutsches Waffen und Munitionsfabrik, Berlin. The Orange Free State was a short lived independent republic 1854 to 1902 in South Africa and founded by Dutch settlers, who where seeking freedom from British rule. During the late 1890's the OVS arrange a contract with DWM to be supplied with a number of Mauser M1895 and 1896 rifles. However delivers where abruptly terminated with the advent of he Boer War with approximately 18,000 rifles being delivered.
