This is in fact a Empire portable type writer , which where produce under licence from the Swiss firm Hermes and was known as the Hermes Baby model which first came out in 1935 and was extremely revolutionary with the the sales slogan "No Higher than a match box". This example is a U.S. Army contract which had additional set of keys on the right side which included an "GR/SS" key. The serial number of this particular machine 18958 dates its manufacture to 1939. It is in working condition, but would benefit with a good service and the black ink tape is dry. This example is unit marked to the 3rd Signal Company.
